Suite of Services
The Shaw School and Studio offers a spectrum of community services and educational opportunities including (but not limited to) art classes and workshops, school programs, fundraisers and corporate events, finger-painting parties for adults and children and healing sessions for individuals and groups.
2008
- June 9, Childrens' Dharma Camp, Won Buddhist Meditation Center, Chapel Hill, NC. During the afternoon session, children will have the opportunity to hear about the early beginnings of finger-painting - including, the ancient oriental use of painting with hands on silk. After an introduction to the paint, they will receive an instructional demonstration of painting as a medium for meditation. Following the introduction, the children will have an opportunity to experiment and explore with movement and color.
- June 18, The Art of Finger-Painting - Then and Now, Granville Historical Museum, Oxford, NC. During this one day event, there will be an exhibit of finger-painting art, a gallery talk by Bryan Carey, founder and director of the Shaw School and Studio in Durham, NC, a live demonstration of Ruth Faison Shaw's technique and an two opportunities for participants to paint and share with each other.
- July 9, Finger-Painting as Art and Recreation, Graduate and Professional Womens Network, Duke University, Durham, NC.
During this workshop, Duke University's Graduate and Professional Womens Network will be introduced to the history of finger-painting and its applications in artistic, educational and therapeutic settings. Participants will receive an introduction to the methods and techniques of originated by Ruth Faison Shaw (1888-1969), including a chronology of her professional life that spanned more than half a century.
- July 12, Finger-Painting for Families, PLM Families Together, Raleigh, NC. Families spending time together creating and co-creating can be both meaningful and memorable. During this 75-minute workshop, parents and children will have the opportunity to be together, learn a new (yet very ancient) art form, paint, craft stories and share.
- July 13, The Art of Employee Appreciation, UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont, Chapel Hill, NC
In appreciation for the fine service delivered by the employees at the UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont, Bryan Carey will share the "art of colorful fun". During the quarterly staff meeting, participants will have the opportunity to explore and experiment with magical movement as they create paintings and stories together.
- July 28 - August 8, Durham Arts Council's Summer Arts Camp, Session D, Ancient Rome, Durham, NC. Participants will have the opportunity to hear about the story of NC artist - educator, Ruth Faison Shaw and her experience of Rome, Italy in the 1920's, including her discovery of finger-paint at the hands of "Little Leonardo" - a member of the royal family. In addition to students learning Shaw's specific technique, the children will have an opportunity to translate a variety of subjects associated with Ancient Rome!
- August 4 - September 15, "Finger-Painting, A Perfect Medium for Self-Expression," Shaw School, 305 E. Chapel Hill Street, Durham, NC
Ruth Faison Shaw's "Finger-Painting: A Perfect Medium for Self-Expression" was first published in 1934. Congruent with the original intent of her book, this 6-week series will be devoted to sharing the Shavian Technique as a catalyst for creativity. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the importance of bodily dance-like movement through colorful gelatinous paint to delve deeper through the layers consciousness. Additionally, students are encourage to journal their inner and outer experiences as reflected in the paint.
