Introduction
Jennifer Falchi was introduced to the Shaw Finger-Painting Method at an exhibit of Bryan Carey’s paintings in 2003. Captivated by the picture story-record idea, she read Shaw’s book Finger-Painting: A Perfect Medium for Self-Expression. As a mother of two children, she immediately identified with Shaw’s educational philosophy and idea that children could teach themselves almost anything if adults simply provided the necessary tools in an environment with minimal direction and interference. Since then Jennifer has acquired a mastery of the Shavian Technique to use as a catalyst for personal introspection and to support and empower others in their desire to achieve awareness and directed growth. Through artistic expression she has developed of a genre reminiscent of her meaningful experiences as a Peace Corps volunteer in Sri Lanka.
As Associate Director of the Shaw School and Studio Jennifer has spent the last three years, developing her individual artistic style, exhibiting (including her children's work), teaching and co-facilitating workshops at venues in North Carolina such as Central Park School for Children in Durham, Won Buddhist Meditation Center in Chapel Hill and Roots and Wings in Roxboro. She believes that this projective technique is an impetus for conversation and therefore an ‘automatic therapy’ in the words of Ruth Shaw. She is devoted to facilitating others use of this technique to express themselves through color and movement creating soulful expressions. As the paint mirrors each person's life experience and the painter is encouraged to frame this pictoral representation with their associated thoughts and feelings personal healing can occur.
